For nearly two decades, Hollywood has relied on fantasy films to make a living. Following the enormous critical and commercial success of Peter Jackson's 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy, which debuted in 2001, Hollywood has churned out a slew of fantasy films in quick succession. To name a few, some of the most popular fantasy films released in the last two decades include 'Harry Potter' (2001–2011), 'Underworld' (2003–2016), 'Twilight' (2008–12), and 'Alice in Wonderland' (2010–2012). This is accompanied by the commercial success of franchise films. The majority of commercial blockbusters in the last 50 years have been produced by the MCU, 'Star Wars,' 'Jurassic Park,' and 'James Bond' franchises and film series.
Snow White is a culturally significant and well-known folklore and fairy tale. It is a German fairy tale that dates back to the early nineteenth century. In 1812, German academies Jacob Ludwig Karl and Wilhelm Carl, also known as Brothers Grim, compiled oral folklore into written narratives. The fairy tale tells the storey of the titular Snow White, who is imprisoned by the Evil Queen, a jealous and villainous stepmother who believes she is the most beautiful person until her magical mirror reveals that Snow White is, in fact, the most beautiful girl, which leads to her confinement. Snow White, on the other hand, escapes and seeks refuge in the small house of the seven dwarfs. The folklore then follows Snow White's quest to dethrone the evil queen and restore peace and prosperity to the land.
Several films have been made based on the storey. The first film to feature the storey was 'Snow White,' a silent comedy directed by J. Searle Dawley in 1916. Walt Disney's 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' (1937), considered one of the most beloved films ever made, is the most popular and critically acclaimed adaptation. Tarsem Singh's directorial feature 'Mirror Mirror' (2012), starring Lily Collins as Snow White and Julia Roberts as Queen Clementianna, has recently adapted the storey. 'Snow White and the Huntsman,' directed by Rupert Sanders, was released the same year, followed by Cedric Nicolas-prequel Troyan's 'The Huntsman: Winter's War,' directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan (2016)
The first film is a retelling of the folklore, starring Kristen Stewart as the titular Snow White, who grows up to be imprisoned by her stepmother, the villainous Queen Ravenna, played by Charlize Theron. Snow White escapes Ravenna's clutches after years of confinement, forcing Eric, played by Chris Hemsworth, a huntsman, to return her to captivity. She also promises to bring back his deceased wife if he completes the task assigned to him successfully. The second film serves as a prequel and follows the storey of Eric and Sara, who is also a warrior and is played by Jessica Chastain. Raised as members of the army of the ice Queen Freya, played by Emily Blunt, the two must hide their forbidden love from them and fight to survive Freya and her sister Ravenna's evil intentions.
If franchise films like 'Resident Evil' and 'The Twilight Saga' are any indication, no matter how poorly a film performs critically, its commercial success earns it a second release. With a four-year gap between 'Snow White and the Huntsman' and 'The Huntsman: Winter's War,' there's a chance that production houses Roth Films and Perfect World Pictures hint at a third film, completing the trilogy. Overall, the two films have grossed more than $561 million against a budget of $232 million. So, based on how the two films have performed commercially and critically, this is all we know about the yet-untitled film.
Due to the narrative differences between the first two films, the third production can continue with a time jump to merge the two characters. The third film, like the 'Underworld' and 'X-Men' series, could serve as a sequel to 'The Snow White and The Huntsman.' Because Queen Raveena was mortally wounded in the first film, the third may not feature the villain unless the film attempts to jump timelines or uses the tool of fantasy to revisit her character. Similarly, with Queen Freya succumbing to her injuries, she does not have a bright future.
Given how the first two films have progressed, it is safe to assume that the third film will focus on the character of Huntsman. While the first was more faithful to the source material and focused on Snow White's relationship with the evil queen, the second dealt with the character arc of the Huntsman. The adventures of Eric and Sara can also be enjoyed in 'The Huntsman 3'.
a film in which Kristen Stewart does not play Snow White The 29-year-old actress is already working on a couple of projects and does not appear to be available anytime soon. The actress later stated that she did not want to be a part of a sequel or prequel. As a result, the actress will not be appearing in the third film.
Furthermore, within the timelines of the two films, both Theron and Blunt's characters are essentially dead. Jessica Chastain and Chris Hemsworth are the only two main characters who haven't confirmed anything or whose characters haven't died yet. Chastain has stated several times that she would play a strong and prominent female character at any time, and both films feature female leads. Chastain, on the other hand, is already preoccupied with a number of projects. With her involvement in the 'X Men,' she could very well be busy with the series' future films, assuming her character isn't killed off.
Hemsworth, on the other hand, is in a difficult situation. He is most likely the only actor from the original 'Avengers' cast whose character has not yet died. He has also joined the 'Men in Black' spin-off, which will almost certainly multiply into a couple of films that will most likely span more than five years. He also appears in the View Askewniverse's eighth film, 'Jay and Silent Bob Reboot.' As a result, we must also await his statements.
The two films were directed and written by two completely different people. So that remains a question. James Newton Howard, an American composer, had composed the scores for both films and would almost certainly do so for the third. The composer has already worked on a few notable films and has been nominated for eight Academy Awards. He is currently working on 'Jungle Cruise,' which is produced by Walt Disney Pictures, and 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 3,' which is produced by Warner Bros. Given that the two films rely heavily on musical work, Howard would move on to the next project following the completion of the two films. Conrad Buff IV edited both films and hasn't worked on anything since 'The Equalizer 2'. (2018).
Though the film has not yet been announced, given the commercial success of the previous two films, it would not be surprising if the third film is greenlit. The second film ended with no indication of how things would progress. Because pre-production has not yet begun, The Huntsman 3 will most likely not be released before 2022.
