How to use the GST portal

Among the features that make the Goods and Services Tax or GST regime successful is the fact that now tax management is technologically supported. There is no need to stand in line at your local income tax office to file GST, view credit ledgers, or claim refunds for excess tax paid. Online tax services are available instead.

Begin by logging into the official GST portal of the Government of India. Listed below is a guide for existing and first-time users on how to login.

What is the GST e-way bill system?

A waybill, also known as an e-way bill, is a document that transporters should carry when moving goods from one state to another or within a state. Taxes on goods are tracked through e-way bills.

For every consignment of goods valued at over Rs. 50,000, an e-way bill must be generated on the e-way bill portal.

When generating an e-way bill, a unique e-way bill number, or EBN, is assigned to the transporter, the recipient, and the supplier.

Creating an e-way bill requires the following information or documentation:

  1. Challan of the consignment of goods/bill of supply
  2. In the case of road transportation, the transporter ID or vehicle number
  3. When the consignment is transported by rail, air, or sea, the transporter ID, transport document number, and date on the document

Before the implementation of GST, waybills were generated through state-specific portals and were governed by state regulations. GST governs the e-way bill uniformly throughout India.
