One exception exists to Microsoft's strict Windows 11 device requirements. Find out more

It is likely that Microsoft will maintain the minimum system requirements for Windows 11, including TPM 2.0, despite user complaints. One workaround is available, however.

Windows 11 is now available. Upgrade requirements for the new operating system aren't the most lenient. In order to do so, you will need 64-bit processors, 4GB of memory, 64GB of storage, UEFI secure boot, and TPM 2.0In an August blog post, Microsoft said it would maintain these requirements despite pushback from users.ts. The compatibility list was updated to include more processors, however. Intel's Core X- and Xeon W-series processors are now supported by Microsoft, as well as select devices with the Intel Core 7820HQ, including the Surface Studio 2.

Even if you don't get Microsoft's support, you may be able to upgrade older machines using a workaround.

Microsoft explains that the strict system requirements for Windows 11 are based on performance and security. Testing by the company found that devices that failed to meet minimum requirements experienced 52% more kernel mode crashes. Video conferencing, working, and gaming applications also fall under these requirements, the post said.

Those who wish to upgrade to Windows 11 on an older device not on the upgrade list will be able to do so manually, either through the Windows Insider program or Microsoft's Media Creation Tool (which enabled many people to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 for free). As a result, Microsoft will no longer support that version of Windows 11.

Using the PC Health Checker app, you can also find out why your device is not compatible and what next steps you need to take. Microsoft will still support Windows 10 through October 2025 if you can't download Windows 11 on your device or don't want to buy a new Windows 11 PC. Many people can still download Windows 10 for free using the tool that allows them to do so.
